Social Media and the Great Outdoors

Hello dear readers!!!

You might have noticed my conspicuous absence the last week or so. I was off doing an amazing thing….are you ready to hear what it was?

I took a little social media break. I say “little” because I couldn’t stop looking at my Instagram (I know, it’s a problem), but for the last week I haven’t checked my email, my Facebook or this blog.

It felt GREAT!!

You have probably read some articles, like I had, on the benefits of taking a short break from all the “white noise” that surrounds us every day. IE: Facebook, Instagram, email, our smartphones, twitter, and heaven knows what else there is to distract us from real life.

I had poo-pooed the idea of taking a week-long break because how would someone who worked from home actually make that work?

The answer?

It just does.

I finally checked my email this evening and I have several hundred messages waiting in my inbox and the thing is, not one of them is do or die urgent. It is OK.

I heartily encourage you to take a block of time that works for you and ignore all the distractions the world is shouting at you. A week might not be sensible for you, maybe you can make a long weekend work or maybe just a day….but whatever time you can make free, please give this a shot!

Go outside and just listen to the birds. Play with your children. Read a book out loud with your family. Go for a hike. LIVE. Be still and LISTEN to the world and the people around you.

At the end of our lives we will remember with fondness the memories we made while actively LIVING in the world, and not the Facebook “likes” we received on a posting.

Buckaroo Barbie Revolution

What if we here at Buckaroo Barbie became the face of a revolution? What if we became the change that we wish to see in the world? Why don’t we become the people at the front of the line, and encourage those coming up behind us by our willingness to be different?

Our generation (and we’re talking about ourselves here) has no class. We’re a bunch of unmannered boors.

The other day I went to lunch with the mums and Adrian, and I was horrified to find that when I sat down I had placed my phone on the table, shoved my elbows next to my plate and slouched in my seat. This didn’t used to be commonplace. And my mums didn’t even comment on my behavior, which means she has grown accustomed to it.

We as a society have grown used to all manner of things that aren’t necessarily good.

We cuss in public.

We make crass jokes in the name of humor.

We wear our sweats to town.

We aren’t expected to always say “How do you do?” or “Nice to meet you.” when we’re first introduced to someone.

People don’t dress when they travel or fly, which used to be a given.

Our children are excused from their public tantrums because they’re not European.

We women aren’t even surprised when we get a text from a man saying “wat up?”, because apparently that’s an acceptable way to strike up a conversation with a woman you want to impress.

WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO US???!

Adrian and I so desperately don’t want to be the norm, we want to be the exception. We want our lives to be a huge fairytale, a story of integrity, hard work, the pursuit of knowledge and life-long class, and we believe the only way to achieve that is by being different.

We’re trying to be different by being…(brace yourselves, I’m going to bust out an old fashioned word here!),…ladies.

We were both embarrassed when we finally admitted to each other that we secretly look up to Kate Middleton and Angelina Jolie. It just seems like such a cheesy thing to say you look up to someone you don’t know, but we do!
Angelina had her wild days and so did Kate, but look at the classy women they are now! We feel that their image is something we’d like to cultivate in ourselves, and although we know that you can’t know someone just from observing the public image, it’s a good place to start when choosing someone as a role model for your own image.

And when we say that that we’re trying to be ladies, we know that we fail most of the time. We’re saying that we’re striving for something bigger than what we are now.

One thing we’re trying to change about ourselves is the fact that we cuss like dock-workers! Seriously. We could probably make a platoon of Marines blush just in an everyday conversation. We’re not proud of ourselves, but the fact remains we have dirty mouths. Sigh. We’re working on it….our new favorite expression? “Sugar lips.”

Even if you don’t agree with our opinion of the world, be the change that YOU want to see around you. Encourage those less bold than you. Stand apart, not because of your shock factor but because of your WOW factor.

So along this theme, we’re going to continue posting on the change we hope to see and the women we ultimately want to be.

Let’s challenge, inspire and encourage one another on our individual quests for excellence, shall we? At the end of the day, that’s what being a Buckaroo Barbie is about.

Leather and Lace

Yesterday was a typical day for us. Not that the day's events were a day-to-day occurrence, but that what happened seemed fairly typical for a Buckaroo Barbie. A juxtaposition
between tough and soft, the cowboy and the fashionista, the outdoorsman and the woman.

Dad and I took Adrian to the airport bright and early yesterday morning so she could start the long journey to Italy. She'll be spending the 4th in the Alps with good friends, roping cows with Italian buckaroos and singing her little heart out. She's kind of my hero.

Adrian likes to have a distinguishing marker on her luggage when traveling.
Otherwise known as an enormous pink suitcase.
Heels, peplum tops, moccasins and leggings....cowboy-girls wear them too!

After eating the worst bacon ever at IHOP, dad and I headed to old town Sacramento to visit his tailor for the final fitting for his custom suit.

I am obsessed with menswear; it's right up there with my love of high heels, Chanel, custom saddles and nice horse flesh. :)

Tailors are a dying breed, much like cowboys and buckaroos. They are highly specialized and their talents frequently go unappreciated. More and more they are being pushed to the side so that less effective methods can pretend to produce the same results due to society's love of quantity rather than quality. Mike (dad's tailor) has a beautiful old school shop that smells like polished wood and wool suits and he used to be former President Ronald Regan's tailor. I like him.

While I was watching dad being fitted, I couldn't help but compare Mike's movements and attitude to some of the older guys I've seen working with a colt. His movements were efficient and quick, none of them wasted. Maybe it's just me, but I think there are a lot of similarities between good hands in the cowboy world and "good hands" in other professions; you just have to look for it.

So many beautiful suits...if I was a man I think I'd wear one every day!

Cuff and sleeve length is as important as saddle fit and rigging placement!

After what felt like a long day spent in heels, we finally headed home. And down amongst the reeds in a river I saw a big cinnamon cow, which wasn't a cinnamon cow at all but a big cinnamon bear! By the time we backed up to get a better look at her, she was gone. They move so darn fast! Luckily dad has great eyes and always trusts them...which means he sees a lot more wildlife than I do!

Slowly driving along and peering into the bushes, dad and I both started to holler at the same time...a cub was staring sheepishly at us! We think there was a sow and two cubs, one of whom got separated from his mother so he kindly decided to climb a tree right next to our pickup so we could admire him. It was grand.

Buckaroo Barbies, Adrian and myself included, have many different interests, passions and dreams. And there's always a balancing of tough and gentle, strong and weak. Look for the lessons you have learned from cowboying, horses and the outdoors and apply them to the rest of your life...it can only help you succeed.

A Saturday Ramble Thru Cigarette Smoke & Poly Ropes

Happy Saturday, Dolls and Gents!

It’s overcast and grey here, the clouds heavy and saturated looking. Mornings like this I wish that I could paint, that I could perfectly capture the right blend of grey and blue on a canvas and so keep that wild and windy feeling forever.

I am brimming with ideas and ambition this morning, my list sitting here in front of me, items waiting impatiently to be checked off throughout the day. I woke up this morning feeling as sick as a dog…I’m thinking that if I only notice it in a sideways manner the feeling will slink off like a stray…that’s what I’m hoping for anyway.

Adrian and I are home for a week or so, and the days to be spent here at home with the mums and dad and dogs and horses, stretch out in front of me like a red carpet, inviting and full of possibilities. I want to use this time to catch up on things I miss when we’re on the road, gypsying it from show to show…like my braiding, shooting clays, riding my fat horse and roping the dummy with dad. It’s an odd feeling, bouncing back and forth between traveling, being on the road, going from show to show, to being home where the rhythm of life is different, a little calmer maybe. When Adrian and I are on the road, we wake up sometimes at 2:30am so she can get to TV and radio interviews on time, then she has sound checks in the afternoon and a show at night, which generally lasts until the early morning while she talks to fans and visits with people about bucking horses, guitars and singing. Then there’s a day of traveling and the process in some form or other repeats itself. I love being on the road with Adrian and she gets really restless when we haven’t seen the blacktop in a while. When we’re home, we’re home. It’s lovely. I wake up and have coffee with dad, he tells me about his business and I tell him how Buckaroo Barbie is coming and what we hope to achieve with it. I go on runs, lift weights, eat whenever I want, do massive loads of laundry, cook with my mums at night and get caught back up on my sleep quotient. It’s like two polar opposites and I love both in different ways.

“These are the good old days.” I keep reminding myself.

The sounds of an Italian voice drift around my head like the cigarette smoke I haven’t smoked in months, lilting, lyrical sounds that I feel my tongue used to know before it knew the English I speak now. I’m trying to learn Italian, and the voice coming from my computer has me repeating, “La donna quida una macchina!” “Cane” and “L’uomo mangia.” Adrian got the amazing opportunity to preform in Italy last spring, and I got to go as well! We hadn’t been in Europe since we moved back to America from Scotland and the experience was wonderful. I hadn’t flown an international flight since I was 12 and either the seats have gotten smaller or my butt has gotten bigger. I’m afraid it’s the latter that’s to blame. I didn’t understand why people in ITALY wanted to hire Adrian to sing cowboy music?! At a ranch roping, no less! But then we got off the plane, I hugged Drew and Natalia, and it was like coming home. The appreciation and love the Italian buckaroos have for cowboying and the West really reminded me of how I felt when we lived in Scotland. I missed it so much that it felt like a hole had been punched out of my middle somewhere, and that hurt, that aching desire is what pushed me to learn as much as I could about cowboying again when we moved back to America. I admire these buckaroos who desperately want to find a better way to get a long with their horses, finding times and places to rope when roping is looked upon as cruel in Italy. They have a certain spunk and desire that I admire, that I want to cultivate in my life. So I work on my Italian here in my California bunkhouse, in the hope that one-day I will go back and be able to communicate and live in Italy for a time, a Buckaroo Barbie in an old land.

I shove my bare feet into sheepskin slippers (I hardly wear shoes when we’re home), and walk into the saddle shop to start organizing my rawhide, so I can start braiding again. My head is full of electric guitar rifts, red/white/blue poly ropes, painted and quilled elk hides, new cowboy boots and dreams of a Van Norman colt….dreams and goals and happenings all mixed up in a jumble of happiness.

I am home.

It is good.
