Week II: Buckaroo Barbie Body Challenge with Lacey Arbough

Here is our second posting from Lacey Arbaugh! If you're new to the Buckaroo Barbie Body Challenge, don't worry just jump in with both feet! :) What Lacey's talking about here with diet means SO MUCH to me personally, because my life has drastically changed for the better BECAUSE of eating clean. Please take her words to heart, this is your life and you only get one body to live that life in. It's pretty important!

Week 2:

Goals are set, just got your new starting stats, and a big journal full of scribbles - you are now ready to take on this new challenge!

Let’s take a step into my kitchen. If you open up my fridge, you are going to see staples such as: eggs, Greek yogurt, almond milk, fresh greens, chicken, LOTS of hot sauce, dog treats (for my beagle), and water. I stick to a very clean diet as much as I possibly can. I notice that when I tend to buy a treat here or there, I will literally eat it all in two seconds, so my discipline is simply don’t buy it.

Nutrition is about 80% of any goal you are trying achieve. You can do as much cardio and lift as heavy as you can in the gym, but if you do not have your diet clean, you will not reach your goals. Our body needs calories and nutrients for energy to function properly, and the only way to get this is to consume it through food.

As a trainer, I take in all of your stats and figure out roughly how many calories you burn on a daily basis. I then construct a meal plan that will keep you in a deficit of eating less than you burn, so you are guaranteed to lose 1-2 pounds per week. Remember anymore than that will be water, and you definitely do not want to be dehydrated. I also construct my plans to have the perfect ratio of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats, the essential nutrients our bodies need, while keeping your metabolism at an all time high.

The biggest confusion I see with my clients is telling the difference between the macronutrients carbs, proteins, and fats. They also don’t understand what these different nutrients do for our bodies. Social media has taken hold of these words and put misconceptions into our brains to make us all confused.

Carbohydrates are our number one source of energy! Your digestive system converts the carbohydrates into glucose (sugar), which is then used for energy in your cells, tissues, and organs. There are two types of carbohydrates: simple and complex. Simple carbs are found naturally in foods such as fruits, vegetables, and milk products. Complex carbs are whole grain breads, pastas, legumes, and potatoes.

Proteins are in every cell of our body, skin, muscles, organs, and glands. It is important we consume protein to help repair and rebuild our cells and to help with our growth and development. When we digest proteins, amino acids are left, and they help break down our food we consume all day. Proteins are found in meats, milk, fish, and eggs, but it does not have to be consumed through animal products.

Fats are also a primary source of energy for our body, and they also help us absorb vitamins. Good fats help with our growth and development and help control our cholesterol levels. Good and healthy fats include olive oil, coconut oil, sesame oil, flax, and almond oil, which I like to include in my diet.

Foods that you absolutely need to avoid in order to ensure you are hitting your goal each week are processed food. I cannot stress enough the importance of this new change to your diet. Processed foods include white breads, lunch meats, candy, soda, artificial sweeteners, etc. These foods are packed full of artificial sugar, preservatives, food dyes, bleach, toxins, thickeners, and chemicals that can negatively affect your overall health and lifespan. Consuming these processed foods are putting you at high risk for cancer, high blood pressure, increased triglyceride levels (fat in blood), diabetes, and obesity.

Now I am sure you are wondering about the journal?! This is where I highly recommend investing in a diet plan designed specifically for you. The journal will give you the discipline you need to stay on track daily with the new diet. It keeps my meals on track and it keeps me disciplined when I feel like cheating on my diet with a cookie. Write down how many calories you are consuming with each meal and start to pay attention to how many grams of each macronutrient you are consuming. You want to be eating about every 2-3 hours to keep your metabolism at its highest to burn all those calories. Track your feelings and moods and you will start to notice how different foods and different ranges of calories will affect the way you feel.

I hope all this information helped to get an idea on how your diet is a huge impact on how you are going to achieve your goals. Invest in a diet plan that is going to specifically for you. Make sure you are eating a well balanced diet full of fresh fruits and vegetables, lean meats, and whole grains. Stay as far away from processed foods as possible and start tracking your meals to stay on track. This will be the biggest change of your life!

Getting Started

I finished lifting weights this morning and opened my email to find this!!! Our very first posting from Lacey Arbaugh on our Buckaroo Barbie Body Challenge! I love how her first piece of advice to us all is on setting goals. I am a HUGE believer in the power of goals and she breaks down what actually needs to happen in order for us to reach our weight/health goals, without having unrealistic expectations. Tonight I'm going to do what she suggest: I'm going to write my goals down for my body and take a "before" picture (dear God). I feel like we're starting this Body Challenge at exactly the perfect time. I know a lot of people whose New Year's Resolution includes losing weight and getting in shape and enough time has passed since New Years for this Challenge to be the perfect kick in the pants to get back on track. What are your specific goals for the Buckaroo Barbie Body Challenge?

Week 1:

Goals

The gym is packed, you just signed up for a fitness challenge, there are a million different machines, sweaty people are everywhere, and, of course, they are all looking at you. Panic mode sets in, so you walk to the bathroom to give yourself a pep talk. Then you walk right back out the door. Sound familiar? Don’t worry - this horror story has happened to us all!

The hardest part in setting a goal is taking the next step and committing. How do you commit to something you know absolutely nothing about? Well, that’s where I come in! I am going to break down the different fitness components into weeks. That way you are guaranteed to have the tools to succeed.

The big question is what goal are you going to set? Is it going to be dropping a pant size, losing 50 pounds, running 5 miles, training for an event, gaining muscle, fitting into a wedding dress, or lowering your blood pressure? You need to pinpoint it down to an exact goal to focus on. Now figure out a realistic time frame. If you come to me asking to lose 50 pounds in a month, I am going to flat out tell you that you will fail. Why set yourself up for something you can’t achieve?

Let me help you calculate a reasonable time frame. To actually burn one pound of fat, you need to burn an extra 3,500 calories that week. With that being said, a healthy range of fat loss per week is going to be 1-2 pounds of fat. Anything extra is going to be water. So, if your goal is to lose 50 pounds, it’s going to take you about 25-50 weeks or about 6-12 MONTHS!

Now as for gaining muscle, that’s a whole different ball game. This is where my frustrations come into play. As a woman, I don’t gain a lot of muscle. Women’s bodies do not have high amounts of testosterone compared to men’s. The average human can gain about a pound or two per month, some males even more. My goal to gain about 5-10 pounds of muscle is going to take me about 20-40 weeks or 5-10 months.

The next step is going to get the dreaded ‘before’ picture. This sounds miserable at the time but trust me. When you look back on your start picture, all of the hard work in-between is amazing. Take a front/side/back photo in clothes that will show your stomach and limbs. Ask a trainer at any local gym to get measurements and find your body fat percentage.

Set weekly goals and make sure to weigh in about every two weeks. Pick a day of the week to go to the gym at the same time every week. That way you know your body is staying consistent. Keep a journal with all of your stats and even start tracking your feelings and different moods. Next week you will start tracking your food, so it may be a good idea to start tracking your food now just to get into practice because this is going to be a huge role in reaching your new fitness goal!

Introducing Lacey Arbaugh and the Buckaroo Barbie Body Challenge

OK Dolls, I am super excited to share this post with you. Remember the other day, I was teasing you all with exciting updates? Well, here's one of them! We've had some requests to do a Buckaroo Barbie Body Challenge and we're going to do it! Lacey Arbaugh is a mutual friend of a friend, a certified personal trainer and basically a BADASS!!! She is incredibly inspiring (I love her positive updates on Facebook), and is really nice, too! I find her story so encouraging because she faces setbacks and opposition to reach her dreams, and she doesn't allow them to stop her. They're just road bumps on her journey to where she is going, her dreams. How inspiring is that?? She's a total Buckaroo Barbie!

So here's how it's going to work. We're going to have a six week challenge with Lacey heading it up and encouraging us. She's involved in a 12 week challenge herself right now, and she is going to share her meal plans with us once a week and some work out ideas for us! HOW COOL IS THAT?!?! I'm really stoked! Here's a little question and answer with Lacey so we can all feel like we know each other before we get started on our challenge!

Q: So Lacey, tell us a little about who you are and what you do!
A: I am a Certified Personal Trainer trying to inspire the importance of health and fitness to the people around me. My plan as a trainer is to find your goal or dream and make it a reality one pound at a time.

Energy & Persistence Conquer All Things -Benjamin Franklin

I have been training in Idaho for over two years and have met and trained with the most inspiring people along the journey. I currently have three fitness certifications and am in the process of attaining my Bachelor Degree in Kinesiology and Nutrition.

Q: How did you get started in fitness?
A:  My passion for fitness started in a dance studio at a young age, but when it really started to impact my life was when I decided to push my body further and compete in a natural body building bikini contest. I am not naturally an athletic person, so for me to gain muscle and lose fat, it takes a lot of time and dedication.

Q: What kind of set backs or struggles have you faced as a person/trainer/competitor?
A:I was recently diagnosed with cystic ovarian syndrome, which limits how hard I train due to constant pain and discomfort. Working around this disease has shown me what the meaning of true strength is, in and out of the gym. It has been a hard struggle mentally, emotionally, and physically trying to find a balance between my down time dealing with the pain and getting back into the gym.

During my down time, I research new training methods and different foods that positively affect my condition so that the moment I can jump back into the gym, I am at my all-time best.

Q: How has that affected you and what have you learned from your struggles?
A:I have also learned to listen to my body, and I now work around how I feel from day-to-day, adjusting my training program as needed. When I am able to train in the gym, I push myself as hard as I possibly can to keep reaching new goals. I decided that I would not let this obstacle stop my dream in becoming an NPC Pro Bikini Competitor.

Q: What is your focus when working with a client?
A:As a trainer, my focus is to promote a healthy lifestyle that will work around my client’s schedule and goals. I like to start by finding out what his/her obstacles and goals are and then build a program specifically for each person. I educate my clients about the many different components that fall hand-in-hand with each other to ensure that they strive to become healthier individuals.

Isn't she stunning? And I'm sorry but her bod is so inspiring!! I want to look like that in a bikini! And I know with hard work, clean eating and some guidance from Lacey, I'm going to get a lot closer to my goals during our Buckaroo Barbie Body Challenge! I hope you Dolls and Gents are excited and use this Body Challenge to encourage you and inspire you towards better health, or kicks you into gear about being serious about your health!

Go "like" Lacey's page on Facebook please and show her some love! She's an inspiration!
